When you download an app, it should work as promised. Which is why human App Reviewers ensure that the apps on the App Store adhere to our strict app review standards. In the Mac App Store, iPhone and iPad apps that work on Mac computers with Apple silicon are labeled with Designed for iPhone or Designed for iPad. Any iPhone or iPad apps you purchase that work on your Mac with Apple silicon are shown when you view your purchased apps in the App Store.

By default, the security and privacy preferences of your Mac are set to allow apps from the App Store and identified developers. For additional security, you can chose to allow only apps from the App Store.

If you have set your Mac to allow apps only from the App Store and you try to install an app from elsewhere, your Mac will say that the app can't be opened because it was not downloaded from the App Store.*

The top app category in the Mac App Store, Michaeli says, is Utilities, with just over 5,000 apps. Utilities include VPN tools for more online privacy, disk space and memory optimizers, and file archiving and extraction tools. The next largest is games, with just under 5,000 games.

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos. Some iOS developers have been updating their apps to make them compatible with macOS, but there are ways to download apps that haven't been optimized and even apps that developers have prevented from being available on macOS. When you test beta apps or beta App Clips with TestFlight, Apple will collect and send crash logs, your personal information such as name and email address, usage information, and any feedback you submit to the developer. Information that is emailed to the developer directly is not shared with Apple. The developer is permitted to use this information only to improve their app and is not permitted to share it with a third party. Apple may use this information to improve the TestFlight app.

Mac users have access to a vast selection of excellent photo-editing apps, but even against its many competitors, Pixelmator Pro stands out as one of the best. It boasts a massive list of powerful features and is currently one of the fastest apps in the entire photo-editing space.

Like the last-gen version of the software, the newest iteration presents you with multiple columns and windows, along with tools to mute users, hashtags, and specific keywords. It also supports third-party apps such as Bitly and Paper and showcases a streamlined interface that pairs perfectly with the latest MacOS look.

I downloaded MPlayerX from the Mac AppStore but it still doesn't allow it to run. I have to change the settings to "Anywhere". This is annoying. After restarting my computer, it will revert to Quicktime as the default player even though I have set MPlayerX as the default prior to shutting down my computer. Before the upgrade to Mountain Lion, I had no such issue. This shows that Apple could not even trust the apps they approved in the Mac AppStore.

The Office apps available from the Mac App Store provide the very latest version of Office on the Mac. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook require a Microsoft 365 subscription to activate. OneNote and OneDrive do not require a Microsoft 365 subscription, but some premium features may require a Microsoft 365 subscription.

No. Office 2019 is the one-time purchase, non-subscription product (also known as perpetual). A Microsoft 365 subscription provides always up-to-date versions of Office apps and access to additional premium features and services. The apps available in the Mac App Store are not compatible with Office 2019 licenses.

If you own the older perpetual release of Office, you can download the new version of the apps from the Mac App Store, and purchase a new Microsoft 365 subscription using the in-app purchase option. In-app purchase offers include Microsoft 365 Family, and Microsoft 365 Personal. Your license from the perpetual release of Office will not work with the app versions from the App Store. Click here to learn about Microsoft 365 subscriptions and pricing.

No. It's likely that you installed Office directly from Microsoft. The Microsoft AutoUpdate app will keep your existing apps up-to-date. The apps in the Mac App Store do not provide functionality beyond what you have today.

Microsoft AutoUpdate is only used to get updates for apps that you download directly from Microsoft. If you download Office from the Mac App Store, then the App Store will provide you with future updates of Office. You may have other Microsoft apps installed on your Mac, and AutoUpdate will continue providing updates just for those apps.

No. Microsoft 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016 use the same application and file names. To see which version of Office you have installed on your Mac, open one of the apps, and look at the License text in the About dialog.

For seven years, the Mac App Store has been one way of purchasing apps for your Mac, and for downloading updates to those apps and to the operating system. Apple is redesigning the Mac App Store with the release of macOS Mojave this fall, providing similar content to the iOS App Store. There will notably be editorial content, in order to expose users to more apps.

In addition, having a centralized source for buying apps can make it easier to manage your app budget. If you want, you can load up your account with iTunes gift cards, and not even give a credit card number. If you have kids, you can give them gift cards so they can buy what they want within the limits of the amount of money on their account.

And, you can install your apps on as many Macs as you use personally. Just sign into the Mac App Store on another Mac, click Purchased, find the apps you want, and download them. You can even have your purchases download automatically to other Macs, if you want.

Most app developers offer free trial versions of their apps, so you can test them out to see if they meet your needs before buying them. The Mac App Store does not offer this possibility. There are workarounds: Some developers make two versions of their apps, a light version and a full version, for example, so you can try out the limited version before paying. In other cases, they release an app for free with limitations that can be removed by making an in-app purchase. Both of these are complex workarounds, and Apple really should offer trial versions.

One downside of the Mac App Store for developers is that it has driven down the price of apps. For many Mac users, this is a good thing, because apps that used to cost hundreds of dollars now sell for a few dollars or less. However, in some cases, these prices have collapsed, leading to developers no longer being able to afford to keep their apps alive.

If you don't like this tool, you could also use MDM tools to package an already downloaded application and distribute it internally. Examples are Casper Suite, sftp, rsync, etc... and side load these apps. You do need to use the GUI or the mas tool to get the first copy of the application, however. So, if you already have the app, you can file share it over, but you can't get the App updated or installed solely from the terminal.

At present, the command line can only list software updates that come through the App Store the same as the previous Software Update server was used to download system updates and updates to apps that came on physical media. Terminal is not able to update apps that were bought electronically through the Mac App Store. Only some Apple apps are included in the updates using the softwareupdate command.

Jamf Pro allows you to configure settings to update all Mac App Store apps in Jamf Pro and on computers that were distributed using managed distribution. You can use the App Updates settings in Jamf Pro to do the following:

In Mojave and previous, the iCloud preference pane is where you manage the iCloud login, and each app, like iTunes and Books, can have a separate Apple ID login. In Catalina, the Apple ID preference pane centralizes both iCloud and purchase accounts in a more clearly defined and labeled way. (Some Catalina apps also have their own account login option, just to be confusing, but you can generally ignore it.)

Have you ever found a piece of amazing software, only to realize it is Mac-only? With such a vast range of software available for Windows machines, it is a rarity. But, at times, there are just some apps that are better on macOS.

From here, downloading and using an Apple app is very similar to the regular macOS experience. You still need to log in to your Apple account to download and use apps from the App Store. It's the same as you'd use on any other Apple devices you own or use. If you cannot remember your Apple ID password, you'll have to reset it using a different device. 2ff7e9595c
